Pam’s Path
In March 2022, our mother, Pam, fell ill with a life-threatening health condition. What began with an emergency surgery to remove a large portion of her small intestines due to a blood clot has now been diagnosed as liver failure. She will require a transplant.
From March to June, her health declined rapidly as she made frequent visits to the ER and follow up visits with her doctor. On June 27th she would take her last steps before becoming disoriented and collapsing. She is now 100% bed ridden and dependent on full time care. Since, she has split time between being cared for by a few family members and home-health professionals as well as lengthy stays at the hospital.
We were fortunate to have mom qualify for a bed at a skilled nursing facility in Gulfport. For 5 weeks, she received full time rehabilitation care and has made positive improvements. However, her time there has ended and she is limited to only upper body mobility, still unable to walk. Mom is now released and will split time between her sons’ houses where she will be cared for by a rotation of just a few family members and home-health professionals as can be afforded.
We will revisit the liver specialist on Sept. 20 to determine the next steps in her recovery. Our goal in the meantime is to continue rehabbing and nourishing (to the best of our unprofessional abilities) to regain her strength to be deemed a qualified candidate for the liver transplant.
May it be with or without a transplant, our timeline and end results are unknown. It has been an uncomfortable strain in our lives physically, mentally, and financially, but we remain positive. With mom unable to work, health care expenses continue to accumulate, therefore, drastic measures are being taken to help cover. Unfortunately, we’re afraid it will not be enough.
Our mother is nurturing, hardworking, strong, and resilient. She’s always been the first person to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Seeing her in this shape is tough to grasp, and now it’s time she’s the one being taken care of.
We all live in tough times right now and money is tighter than ever before. We’re grateful for anything you may be able to contribute. If unable to contribute monetarily, we also appreciate thoughts and prayers throughout her recovery.
